In the developing world, widows often face three main types of rights violations:

- Discrimination
- Suffering from social stigma, shame, and taboos.
- Lack of access to justice and are often denied their legal rights and government entitlements.
Harmful Practices
- Endure degrading and dehumanizing cleansing rites.
- Face intense sexual violence.
Additionally, many elderly individuals are abandoned, left alone in their homes without proper care or even someone to speak to.
